The Fiddleheads Acoustic JamCamp (formerly Fiddleheads Camp) is organized by experienced fiddlers Kathy Sommer (Zimpfer) and Ellen Carlson with the support of other coaches, volunteers and helpers.
Kathy and Ellen are no strangers to the violin/fiddle. Performing with numerous groups since they were very young, they are known for their double fiddling and improvisational abilities. They are on several recordings with bands such as The Fiddleheads Band, Sweet (Red) Hot and Sassy,
Both Ellen and Kathy enjoy playing a wide variety of musical styles. Drawing on bluegrass and classical roots, both are adept at swing, western swing, country, old-time, cajun and jazz.
They have learned from some of the hottest performers today at various fiddle camps throughout the nation: Mark O'Connor; Buddy Spicher; Jay Unger; Matt Glaser; Barbara Lamb; and the Turtle Island String Quartet. They have also taken their fiddling and teaching expertise into the schools giving fiddle workshops and working with orchestras.
Years of experience performing music in public at the professional level, combined with many years of music teaching experience, Kathy and Ellen provide a learning experience second to none. As a student at Fiddleheads Camp you will go home satisfied with loads of practical information from experienced professional musicians and teachers that will aid you for a lifetime.
Ellen Carlson has been performing and teaching for many years. Currently she is the fiddler for the acoustic roots band High Range who has had a number one hit on Music Choice (a cable/satellite radio station) and won runner-up in the International Acoustic Music Awards. She also is a member of the NH State Council on the Arts Education roster. She teaches at Kid's Academies at Grey Fox Music Festival, Joe Val Bluegrass Festival and Pemi Valley Bluegrass Festival. She also currently performs with Jim Prendergast, Joe Deleault, Newfound Grass, the Grumbling Rustics and others.
Ellen performed with the award-winning country band the Blue Hill Kickers in the 1990s opening for such acts as Martina McBride, Steve Warner, and the Mavericks. She has been a guest performer on recordings by various local artists including Dave Gerard (Truffle), the Ron Noyes Band (rock), Fat Hands (folk/country), Late Night Radio (swing), and Deidre Randall (folk). She has given fiddle workshops with April Verch, Ruth Ungar and JP Cormier at the Wolfeboro Folk Festival.
Kathy plays fiddle, electric violin, mandolin, and sings with the band The Buskers, a wild and fun, folky and funky band based in NH, and performs with northern NY musicians as Yellow Moon Jazz. She is adept at folk, swing and jazz, and has tried her hand at the Latin jazz scene as well. You can catch her performing across state lines, traveling with The Buskers or playing a variety of gigs in northern NY, including the Northern Lights Orchestra. She also has played many years for New England contra and square dances, was a member of The Fiddleheads Band, and Sweet, Red, Hot, and Sassy, and gives fiddle workshops in NH and NY.
