Fiddleheads Acoustic Music Camp is for musicians of all levels and offers a weekend of instruction, fun, and community for individuals that play instruments such as fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass, hammer dulcimer, viola, cello, and piano.
Days are filled with informative, hands on, small group workshops. Evenings are filled with concerts, performances, Dances and jamming! It's a weekend of good music, good company, good food, fun and laughter.
The Camp begins with everyone learning a tune together. Most workshops incorporate that tune during the rest of the weekend. Music workshops in years past have included: back-up techniques for playing with others, slow jams, fast jams, learning tunes by ear, improvisation, vibrato, expanding your style, Appalachian fiddle, bluegrass, Swedish music, Klezmer music, and others.
A highlight of the weekend is the
band class, Students form bands of various styles, for example, , Irish, Old Timey,
Blues, Bluegrass, or Jazz. They then select tunes to play and develop their
"Act" with the help of an instructor. On Saturday night the
"Battle of the Bands" concert is performed with everyone having a
grand time. After the performance is a Dance, and jamming
into the night
While primarily a fiddle camp, this is a wonderful opportunity for other
stringed instrument players to learn new tunes, understand more theory, learn to
be part of a band, learn how to back up the melody maker, and be the melody
maker. In addition to scheduled workshops, individual tutoring on your
instrument is easily found from the eager and friendly instructors.
The camp is organized by experienced fiddlers Kathy Sommer (Zimpfer) and Ellen Carlson with the support of other coaches, volunteers and helpers. All of the instructors have a great deal of experience performing music in public at the professional level, and most also have many years of music teaching experience. As a student at Fiddleheads you will go home satisfied with loads of practical information from experienced professional musicians and teachers to aid you in your playing.
In addition to our instructors, guest musicians from the local community are often invited, they assist with coaching and participate in jams and workshops. Students ages range from youngster to senior, and musical ability runs from novice to advanced. Many of our students return year after year, and it's wonderful to see the fine progress they make from one year to the next in their playing.
Fiddleheads Camp has a new home as of 2006, now at Geneva Point Conference Center on the scenic shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. This peaceful setting offers us quaint cabins, porch-lined inns, a rustic dance hall barn with tall timbers and massive fireplace, a chapel hall with a stage and hardwood dance floor, fully equipped dining hall, and ample, comfortable space for workshops.
Geneva Point Center is located in Moultonborough and is surrounded by acres of woods and 5000 feet of shoreline. Accommodations at Geneva Point are dormitory-style rooms in a historic inn and comfortable cabins that sleep up to six people, with baths. The conference center maintains outstanding cleanliness and attention to comfort and satisfaction. The on-site cafeteria-style dining hall serves full meals and accommodates different diets as best possible.
We hope you come and experience the Fiddleheads Camp for yourself. Music, growth, fun, friendship, and community, all in a beautiful, relaxing environment. You will remember it as the best weekend you had all year.
